Sartrapi, M. (2004). Persepolis. NY: Pantheon.
Summary:
Persepolis tells the life story of author Marjane
Satrapi. She tells her life of how it was
growing up in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Even though this story is told in the form of
a graphic novel it depicts the dramatic events in the author’s life. The form that her life is highlighted in the
graphic novel is in black and white. Her
life contradicts the way her world sees her country as how she truly is. Her
tribulations growing up were difficult, but they only shaped her into the
person she is now.
Strengths: This book serves as a
memoir for people who are dealing with a cultural diverse difficulty. She expresses her difficulty in truly being
herself and hides her interest because they did not fit the norm that was
expected from her. She dealt with social
development as per Kohlberg’s Theory-where girls at a preconvention stage are
trying to understand the rules of society, and as a result she would rebel
against them. This book is intended for
students in grades 9-12.
